Popular Music Pedagogy is a one week, interactive workshop which serves as an introduction to implementing and maintaining Modern Band programs at all levels. Participants will become familiar with the use of technology in music and learn the fundamental playing and teaching techniques for all Modern Band instruments including: guitar, keyboard, drums, vocals, and bass. This student-centered approach will provide instant music-making experiences through improvisational activities, recreating familiar popular music selections, and creating new compositions based on style/genre interests. Participants use their new pedagogical knowledge and instrumental skill set to perform original songs they create during the course. The goal of this workshop is to inspire pre-service music educators to leverage the cultural capital of their students and provide a music education experience that will be as diverse as the students they will one day teach.

Dr. Bryan Powell is the Director of Programs for Amp Up NYC, a partnership between Little Kids Rock and Berklee College of Music in support of the New York City Department of Education’s efforts to expand Modern Band music education programming for thousands of public school students. Bryan is a musician and music educator with elementary, secondary, and college teaching experience. Dr. Powell is an adjunct professor of music and education who teaches at NYU and Bergen Community College and also facilitates online Masters and Doctoral-level courses for Boston University.
Prior to joining Amp Up NYC, Bryan served as the Executive Director of GOAL- Giving Open Access to Learning, an educational nonprofit organization based in East Harlem, NY that focuses on youth development through high quality enrichment programming and social and emotional education. From 2003-2008, Bryan taught in the New York City public school system as a full time music teacher, where he served as a Project ARTS Liaison and a Hunter College Mentor Teacher.
Bryan is the founding co-editor of Journal of Popular Music Education, a peer-reviewed, academic journal that seeks to define, delimit, debunk, disseminate, and disrupt practice and discourse in and around popular music education. Additionally, Bryan serves as the Executive Director of the Association for Popular Music Education, an organization dedicated to promoting and advancing popular music at all levels of education.
In 2016, Bryan was elected as the chair-elect for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Special Research Interest Group (SRIG) in Popular Music Education. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals including International Journal of Music Education (IJME), Journal of Music, Technology and Education (JMTE), the International Association for the Study of Popular Music’s IASPM Journal (IASPM), and Action Critique and Theory in Music Education (ACT). Dr. Powell also co-edited a special issue on popular music performance in the Journal of Music, Technology, and Education (vol. 8, issue 2). Additionally, Bryan is editing two book projects focusing on popular music education. The first book, in contract with Routledge, is entitled The Music Learning Profiles Project: Let’s Take this Outside. The second book, Perspectives and Practices in Popular Music Education, is in contract with Bloomsbury Press. Bryan has book chapters accepted for publication in the forthcoming Routledge Research Companion to Popular Music Education, the Oxford Handbook of Social Media and Music Learning and the Oxford Handbook of Philosophical and Qualitative Perspectives on Assessment in Music Education.
Bryan has a Bachelor of Music degree from Pepperdine University, a Masters degree in Education from Chapman University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University. He recently received certification in the Developing Leaders Program for Nonprofit Professionals from the Columbia Business School. His research interests include alternative music education, informal learning and non-formal practices, popular music education, urban education, philosophy of music education, and community music research.

Dr. Cassandra Eisenreich is on the Flute and Music Education faculty at Slippery Rock University where she teaches Applied Flute, Flute Ensemble, Flute Pedagogy, Elementary Methods in Music Education, and Popular Music Pedagogy. She volunteers her time serving as the director and lead teacher for the SRU Early Childhood Music Community Engagement Initiative in collaboration with the Butler County Children's Center. Previously, she served on the faculty at Barry University, Towson University, the Frost Preparatory Program, and was the former Outreach and Program Coordinator at the University of Miami, Frost School of Music.
Dr. Eisenreich completed her D.M.A. and M.M. in Flute Performance with an emphasis in Music Education as a Flute Teaching Assistant and Mancini Fellow at the University of Miami, Frost School of Music. While at the Frost School, she received the "Outstanding Graduate Student" award. She graduated summa cum laude from Slippery Rock University with a B.M. in Music Education and has extensive training and teaching experience in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Orff Schulwerk, Suzuki Flute, Conversational Solfege, and Kindermusik.
As a flutist, Dr. Eisenreich has performed regularly with the Pierce Theatre Players, Florida Grand Opera, Florida Sunshine Pops, Walenstein Symphony Orchestra, and has performed with the New World Symphony and Pittsburgh Symphony. She has also had the opportunity to perform and record with top artists including George Benson, Michael Feinstein, Dave Grusin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Mark O’Connor, Terence Blanchard, Jon Secada, Patti Austin, Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres, Sammy Figueroa, Pharrell Williams, and groups including Take 6 and Tiempo Libre. As a chamber music artist and an advocate of new music, she enjoys working with emerging composers and premiering new works. She is the 2011 recipient of the Co-op Press Recording Grant and has recently been named a Co-op Press Recording Partner.
Dr. Eisenreich has performed and presented at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels including the National Flute Association Convention, Music Teachers National Convention, Chamber Music America Convention, College Music Society Convention, Ravinia Festival, Quincy Jones Musiq Consortium, and many more. As an educator, she loves working with groups of all ages and ability levels and enjoys serving on the National Flute Association's Pedagogy Committee. A strong advocate for Eurhythmics, she has given workshops for elementary, secondary, collegiate, and professional groups including chamber music ensembles, full orchestras, pedagogy courses, and general classroom teachers. Her private flute students have been admitted into arts schools at all levels, have won acceptance into flute competitions, district bands, honors bands, college music programs, and have been awarded superior ratings at district and state solo and ensemble festivals.
With the belief that every child should have the opportunity to experience music, Dr. Eisenreich has teamed up with Nuvo Instrumental as their Music Education Specialist and leading Flute Ambassador. At Nuvo, Dr. Eisenreich advises curriculum design, creates educational programs, and provides guidance and support to music educators around the world. She has implemented a number of outreach initiatives at schools and community centers in the US and abroad where children of low-income families have been given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.
